Canada

We are very proud to be Canadian and our pride shows in our classrooms.  Here are some of our activities that went on in our classrooms.

Proud to be Canadian; We sent home two maple leaves made out of heavier paper, one red, the other, white.  Families were encouraged to write why they were proud to be Canadian on one and pictures of their family on the other.  See picture

Canadians Can

Children brainstormed Canadian sports and other active pursuits that Canadians do.  Using cardboard maple leaves the children created a mobile, with the top maple leaf saying Canadians Can, and the hanging leaves have pictures with stick people drawings that show action.  On the other side of the leaf we wrote the verb, (action word) to go with it.

The children were so interested that they choose their favourite action drawing and made a larger version.  See the picture below.

Do you want to make your own action figure?

Start by thinking about which action you want to capture, someone running, jumping, kicking? Then think about what view you want to have, a side view?, a front view?  Ask someone else (a model) to freeze in the action you want to capture.  Think about what their body looks like, are their knees bent, where are their arms.  Using your pencil draw the stick figure.  Then use paint and paint the body. If you want, you can use black paint to outline the action figure.  See pictures for examples.

More action figures.

Canada Is... Writing

After listening to the Michael Mitchell song "Canada is" we became so inspired that we wrote our own Canada Is book.  Using maple leaf booklets (we had parents trace and cut out maple leaf pages)  We wrote the things Canada is, for example; Canada is the Great Lakes, Canada is hockey, Canada is happy families, Canada is peace.  Our booklets were displayed on a bulletin board, see picture below.

Canada Poster

We had so many great ideas about Canada that we decided to make a poster of our favourite characteristic.  We discussed important poster elements; the picture has to be simple, bright colours, carry a message, and fill the whole page.  As you can see below Keaton's favourite thing about Canada is hockey.  What is yours?

Favourite thing about Canada

The Collections series, has a great story called "Good Sports", after reading the story we created our own web.  Using the Inspiration program, we chose one sport, hockey, and wrote all the things you need to play hockey.  Can you create your own web on a sport?
