In "A Ticket To Canada," the children researched the following topics having to do with culture, sports, and recreation. They worked with a partner, using a variety of resources to find information on the following topics: Sports, Schools, Visitors to Stay, Food, Holidays, Languages, Cities, Religions, Festivals, Weather, Recreation.

Sports

Canadians are crazy about hockey! Quebec, Alberta, and B.C. have great ski slopes. Snowboarding is huge these days. Summer brings swimming, biking, hiking, tennis, and rollerblading. People of all ages like to play baseball and soccer.

Schools

Each province is in charge of schools. Students learn English and French. Canadian public schools offer free education.

Visitors to Stay

Canada's two largest ethnic groups are French and English. Many people from all over the world have come to Canada to live because we are a peaceful country.

Food

Lobster and salmon are special mealtime treats. Family favorites are spaghetti, meat loaf and peanut butter sandwiches. Chicken and hamburgers cooked on the backyard grill are also popular.

Holidays

Canadians love a holiday, especially when they can miss school or work! The entire country celebrates. Canadians celebrate the birth of our country on Canada Day on July 1st. People celebrate with parades, picnics, and fireworks.

Languages

Canadians have two official languages- French and English. In cities like Toronto and Vancouver, half the children going to school speak other languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Arabic.

Cities

Canadians make their homes in cities and towns. Almost one third of the entire population of our country lives in three of our largest cities, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

Religions

Most Canadians are Christian, but many people who have come to live here are Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh.

Festivals

People all over Canada celebrate their cultural heritage "big time!" During the summer and winter, many festival happen all over our country. One of the biggest winter festivals is in Quebec in February. One of the biggest summer festivals in Alberta is "Heritage Days" in Edmonton in August.

Weather

It is cold in the winter in Canada. Winter can last from November to April. Summer flowers bloom in June, July, and August, when it can get very hot.

Recreation

Many Moms and Dads work during the day, so they really like to get out and enjoy free time. They like to spend time outdoors, with friends, playing sports, and having sleepovers! Canadian kids like to stay busy.
